Organics Pilot Project
Organics Program

In 2006 residents in the Village of Bridgenorth and residents using the Buckhorn Landfill Site participated in a pilot project for the collection of organic material. This project was a great success and we will be moving ahead with expanding this service.  We currently have approval to expand to the remainder of Bridgenorth and to the 6th Line Transfer Station near Havelock.  We are very excited with how well this program is being received and look forward to further expansion.

What are organics?

Organics make up about 38% of our waste.  This material includes peelings from fruits and vegetables, egg shells, breads, bones, meat, coffee grounds, paper napkins, leaves, plant trimmings and more!  Organics include most things that were once living; both plant and animal.  Even those who backyard compost can reduce their waste further using a municipal organics collection.  This program accepts materials that you would not include in your backyard composter such as meats and bones.

Why don’t we just throw organics out?

Composting organic material is a great way to reduce waste since it makes up such a large part of our waste and can be turned into a useful product – compost.  Compost can be used for fertilizer in gardens and on lawns.  Organic material should not be thought of as waste.  It is a resource that should not take up valuable landfill space.

How does this Program work?

Our program collects organics in two ways.

Curbside Collection

One way is through a curbside collection in a selected area of Bridgenorth where residents will collect up all of their fruit and veggie scraps, meats and bones, tissues and paper towels and set them in their Green Cart for Collection.

Depot Collection

For residents who bring their recycling and garbage to the Buckhorn Landfill Site, they may now also drop off organic material.  For the depot collection, we have installed a Molok, deep collection system to hold the material until it is collected and taken to the Composting Facility on Harper Road for processing.  Residents started bringing us their material early in July.
