August '06 August '06 October '06 January '07 What are organics?Organics make up about 38% of our waste. This material includes peelings from fruits and vegetables, egg shells, breads, bones, meat, coffee grounds, paper napkins, leaves, plant trimmings and more! Organics include most things that were once living; both plant and animal. Even those who backyard compost can reduce their waste further using a municipal organics collection. This program accepts materials that you would not include in your backyard composter such as meats and bones. Why don’t we just throw organics out?Composting organic material is a great way to reduce waste since it makes up such a large part of our waste and can be turned into a useful product – compost. Compost can be used for fertilizer in gardens and on lawns. Organic material should not be thought of as waste. It is a resource that should not take up valuable landfill space. How does this Program work? Our program collects organics in two ways.
